Investing in Your Most Important Asset
August
2010 My career has now spanned over four decades in the healthcare arena and I feel that today is the most exciting time to be involved in Medical Billing industry. There isn't a day that goes by where there isn't a news report or a discussion on talk radio about the "Healthcare Crisis."

Inhale, Exhale, Email ...Tips for effectively handling email
July
2010 I guess it was about three years ago that I began my day with my usual routine of checking my email. For whatever reason, on this particular day, I felt sick and totally overwhelmed by so many unanswered, incomplete communications, sitting in my inbox, demanding my attention. My brain hurt. I was dizzy from days, weeks and months of reacting and responding to emails, working on electronic documents, and, in general spending too much face time with plasma screens.

Taking the Paper Out of Paperwork: Web-Based Document Management Is the Business Trend You Can't Ignore
July
2010 It's inevitable. Electronic document management will soon be the only practical and acceptable way to retain, retrieve and distribute your business critical information. But don't worry; this doesn't have to be a scary thing. Thousands of billing companies just like yours have learned to leverage web-based technology to switch painlessly from paper-based filing and storage to an electronic document management solution. Consider it a business imperative, since continuing to store critical documents on paper will make it nearly impossible to compete successfully in today's global economy.

How Technology has Changed Medical Billing
January
2010 When we started our medical billing business in 1994 things were very different than they are today. Electronic claim submission was just catching on. Living in a rural area in NY it was almost unheard of. Medicare and some of the larger insurance carriers were offering incentives for providers who submitted their claims electronically such as faster payments. Dot Matrix printers with multi-paged forms were common and email was in its infancy.

Economic Climate Change - Key Elements to Monitor or Adjust
January
2010 Global warming isn't the only climate change we're living through. Many of us have never lived through an economic downturn of the magnitude that we are currently experiencing. We have seen our 401Ks drop so low that they are now going to be renamed 200.5Ks. The Blue Chip stocks of 2007 may become a penny-stock listing in 2010. Your neighborhood block party maybe minus a few families if you don't hold it before foreclosure season kicks in.

Some Things I Think, I Think: What's in Store for Healthcare?
November
2009 Now that over half the year has past and we have a new administration in place, hardly a day goes by without a headline about healthcare reform in some newspaper, magazine, or blog. Although the media mentions healthcare daily, no concrete plans have surfaced. That means it's anyone's guess as to what's going on in the various committees that are searching for viable solutions.

They Say They Are HIPAA Compliant, But...
September
2009 We are going to take a quick break from our five part series, Security At Your Fingertips, so I can get something off my chest. I've been dealing with this problem for a long time now and, quite frankly, I'm getting tired of it. This problem is in most of the Billing and EMR softwares I've seen on the market (along with a lot of other software out there) and it doesn't seem to be getting that much better after all this time. Before I continue, we need a disclaimer:

Human Resource Management: Coding & Billing Leaders' Guide to Hiring
September
2009 Vacancies impact not only their respective departments, but can chip away at management's ability to be effective, nimble responders and produce the results their superiors expect. Coding and billing openings, however, create a distinct opportunity to achieve capitol results. They are not only good fortune for the prospective employees; they also represent chances at gaining valued knowledge and skill, refueling your unit morale and generating interest in your organization.

Identify Theft
July
2009 Last month, I gave a seminar on Patient Registration. In the seminar, I pointed out the importance of making sure that practice staff verified the information they were given and made sure that all information was entered carefully and without error into practice management systems. There is a term if this is not done correctly called GIGO. Garbage In, Garbage Out!

Security at Your Fingertips Part 2 of 5
July
2009 Our focus was on preventing the installation of those nefarious thumb drives that everyone seems to have these days. However, the technique works for other hardware as well. Keep in mind that you must have Windows Vista to use that feature - it is not available on Windows XP or below. Also, keep in mind that when I speak of Windows XP, I specifically mean Windows XP Professional. With Vista, I specifically mean Windows Vista Business or Windows Vista Ultimate. I cannot guarantee that any of these features are available in the home editions of Windows as I do not support those editions.

Security at Your Fingertips - Part 1 of 5
May
2009 That's right, everyone. Here we are in yet another multipart series - as if the 10 Laws of computer security weren't enough. One of the biggest issues many people face when implementing security is cost. For some odd reason, so many people think that in order to have a secure environment they have to go out and purchase expensive third-party tools to do all kinds of whacky things. This isn't to say there aren't some nice third-party security tools out there, some of them really are nice, but before we break out the company credit card I think we need to take a look at what's already on our computer to see if it will do the job we need. Many of you will be very surprised at what Windows can do all on its own. Let's get started with today's article:

Immutable Security Law 10
March
2009 At long last, here we are. Welcome, everyone, to number ten in our ten part series "The 10 Immutable Laws of Computer Security." It's been a very long ride, however, based on the feedback I have received it appears many of us have gotten something from all of the articles I've written about computer security and that was the whole idea from the start. Is some of this stuff a pain in the butt? Yes, it is. Is this stuff impossible to do or too expensive? No, it's not as long as you do some planning and use some good ol' fashioned common sense (and maybe kick your IT person around a little bit).
