Experienced & Certified... Why do I need CEUs
August
2010 As Vice President of the PMBA, I have the opportunity to assist in the development of individuals seeking to start their own medical billing service. Many have years of experience, and will become certified by one or more associations. Industry members often disagree on the need for certification, but once obtained the question is often asked "Why do I need CEUs?"

Continuing Education Builds a Stronger Resume - It's More Than Just Fluff
August
2010 Over the years, many coders and even some supervisors have asked me whether continuing education builds a stronger resume, or just adds a bunch of letters behind your name. I cannot understand why continuing your education by earning credentials is a bad thing.

The Paradox of Prosperity- Does More Mean Less?
May
2010 In his book, 'A Whole New Mind, author Daniel Pink tells us that "The paradox of prosperity is that while living standards have risen steadily decade after decade, personal, family, and life satisfaction haven't budged. That's why more people-liberated by prosperity but not fulfilled by it-are resolving the paradox by searching for meaning."

What Am I, A Machine?
March
2010 We are living in an extraordinary time-at the beginning of the technological revolution. The impacts of technology and the ensuing explosion of information are profound, pervasive, and irreversible. According to James Canton, futurist and author of The Extreme Future, ... 'by 2015 there will be more than 50 billion chips that will all be connected into one wireless global network, speaking one language.' While these computer chips allow us to virtually connect anywhere and anytime, many of us feel disconnected interpersonally. For those of us old enough to remember what life was like when the 'stores were closed on Sunday's, or, when 'you didn't work weekends' we remember a simpler, slower time. It just felt different

Integrity in the workplace
November
2009 At my place of business we speak about integrity all of the time. It comes up in our monthly meetings, and we talk about it when counseling an employee. We present it when we initially hire someone. We evaluate, as much as possible, whether a new hire has the integrity we are seeking for our team. Integrity is wrapped up in what we call the "work ethic." As an employer, I find what I am looking for in an employee as far as integrity, as difficult to define. But in the end, it is the most important characteristic of a team member. Most of my Employee Handbook is spent defining integrity and what is expected of each person.

Pride in Our Profession
October
2009 When you become a coder or biller, you have a commitment to this profession. It doesn't matter if you're new and you've been one for one day or if you've been a coder or biller for 40 years. We have over 900,000 providers who depend on us for their income and livelihood. We are in charge of more than $2,000,000,000 of healthcare dollars and with that comes a commitment to do what is right. To do what is right, medical coding and billing requires us to follow certain values and we must always stand ready to defend those values at all costs by setting the example of commitment to do what is right.

The Feelings of Disappointment
November
2006 Steve Verno, CMBS writes: I've been in the medical field since 1971. I started out working at a local hospital taking care of patients. I remained in the medical field for the next 21 years. I can't count how many patients I treated over the years. When I retired from clinical medicine, I went into medical administration and became an office manager at a small health clinic in Albany, New York. There I learned about CPT and ICD-9 codes. I helped develop their superbills and I interacted with patients, State regulatory authorities and insurance companies.
