2010 The certifications that I have obtained through AAPC, PMI, ACMCS, and NAMAS, just reinforce the knowledge that I have obtained and lend credibility to others that you do know what you are doing. The initials after your name tend to make people listen to you.

2010 I have always been in the healthcare industry, with the exception of a 3-month stint that I worked for my dad in the construction industry. During that time I realized that I really missed healthcare. I started off working in an ER as a patient liaison. From there, I went to Respiratory Therapy school and while earning my degree I worked for an Urgent Care Facility. The Urgent Care was a great basis as it allowed me to work the front desk, work as an MA, and since we had residents working in the clinic- they were eager to teach and I learned so much.

2010 Well, I have been in the health care industry for over 20 years. I started out in x-ray. I found out that "hands-on" patient care was not my bag. My employer was a hospital that owned clinics. They said that they had a great position to put me in since I knew medical terminology and anatomy. I showed up for my new job, was given the coding books and told, "Get to work". I had no idea what I was doing!! I had to pretty much teach myself. Any seminar or class that became available I would take. I became certified in the 80s when I learned of the AAPC. I later became certified through AHIMA and other organizations.

2010 My father, Michael and Uncle David, founded our company in 1985. They focused on the development of medical software and created the original version of our practice management system. They quickly realized selling the software was not the solution that met the needs of the physicians' offices and transitioned the company into the billing service we are today that includes practice management functions, accounts receivable management and medical billing consulting.

2009 As a child, I always knew that I would work in the medical field. However, my dream was to become nurse. After being exposed to the administrative side of healthcare, my goals instantly changed. I began working at a well-known hospital here in Atlanta and based upon my experience and knowledge gained at that facility, my career took a different path. I have a degree in healthcare administration; I hold CPC, CPC-P and CPMA (Certified Professional Medical Auditor) credentials. As my knowledge base grows, so will my credentials.

2009 I was working in retail when I lost my first husband in a car accident. We had a two year old son and I needed to make enough money to support him. We had been in the Air Force for eight years, six months before the accident so we did not have much money and just a small amount of life insurance.

2009 I started coding about 13 years ago, when I was given the opportunity to work on claims follow-up at an OBGYN office. At that time I had no experience with billing, so I picked up an aging report and I began to call. After getting my first appeal paid, I knew that medical billing was going to be my career path.

2008 I started in the industry back in 1982 with Blue Cross and Blue Shield of Florida. My first job was as a Medicare Part B claims examiner. I worked my way up and when I left I was the supervisor of the In-Line Quality Analysis Department. That department was responsible for auditing the accuracy of claims processed. While I worked for "the Blues," I learned a lot about Medicare's internal edits and audits, how suspended claims are worked, medical review, and the "Medicare Carrier's Manual." I did some provider education and also trained new employees on claims processing. In 1992 I started working for the University of Florida Jacksonville Physicians, Inc. as a Medicare follow-up and collections coordinator.

2008 I have been in the medical billing and coding industry for 27 years. I have worked for Anesthesia Specialists, a group of nine cardiac anesthesiologists practicing at Sentara Heart Hospital for the past 17 years. I began my career in billing and coding by filing Medicare claims for Chesapeake General Out Patient Hospital. At the time I was working as a phlebotomist. One day I was checking the job postings and saw one for an Out Patient Medicare claims clerk. I had no experience, but applied for the position anyway. My supervisor, Mrs. Frances Trueblood gave me a chance to try this. She is the reason I am in this field today. Instructions? She gave me a CPT book and a stack of Medicare claims and told me to "bill 'em."

2007 I come from several generations of medical family members. The unfortunate news is I did not receive the cast iron stomach gene so I explored the administrative side of health care. I started at Blue Cross Blue Shield of Kentucky, worked at Prudential's home office in Houston, TX, and New York Life and Humana, both in Louisville, KY. I have worked for Humana since 1985.
