Date Posted: Monday, March 14, 2016

A new American Health Information Management Association book, Management for the Health Information Professional, provides instruction in management principles from an HIM viewpoint, creating a foundation and path for students and health information management (HIM) professionals in today's rapidly changing healthcare environment.

Using real-world scenarios and job titles commonly found in the HIM profession, authors Janette R. Kelly, MBA, RHIA, and Pamela S. Greenstone, M.Ed., RHIA, explain topics that affect the HIM department including recruitment, training, change management, human resources law and the sustainability of the HIM workforce.

"This is an exciting time to start a career in HIM," said AHIMA CEO Lynne Thomas Gordon, MBA, RHIA, CAE, FACHE, FAHIMA. "HIM professionals are in high demand because our skills are needed to ensure the integrity and security of patient information as well as analyze the growing amount of data to improve health outcomes. This book provides an excellent foundation for students and HIM professionals looking to grow in their career."

Key features of the book include:

  • Information addressing how HIM's role impacts typical healthcare organization models.
  • Learning objectives, key terms and Check Your Understanding questions to test comprehension of chapter material
  • Case studies covering both chapter content as well as comprehensive scenarios covering multiple management principles for HIM professionals with 3-5 discussion questions or activities linked to competencies
  • An appendix providing three additional case studies written from a manager's perspective, integrating content from all chapters
