Now we all know about the big change that is happening soon with the transition of ICD-9 to ICD-10. It has been spoken about for quite a while with many scare tactics and rumors making many coders and billers nervous and filled with dread at the thought of such a significant change.
This book was written with intention of breaking down the principles of ICD-10-CM coding into manageable pieces of information that will assist in bridging existing ICD-9-CM knowledge to the new system. There are 12 chapters that provide a logical route to understanding ICD-10-CM and how it relates to the reason for the implementation, the reimbursement process, the new coding conventions and code assignment and much more.
The book is basically presented in two parts. Part I provides the overview of the history and background of ICD-10-CM, understanding the format of ICD-10-CM and the conventions and terminology that is unique to ICD-10-CM and the steps required to correctly select an ICD-10-CM diagnosis code. Part II actually takes you through the individual chapters and provides instructions on coding the many diseases and injuries with a chapter devoted to conventions and terminology.
Each chapter includes checkpoint exercises and a quiz and there's also a CD-ROM that has the answers as well as PowerPoint slides for each chapter that can be used as an overview. Also included on the CD-ROM is an exam-testing module that has a mid-term and a final examination with answer keys for both exams.
So, you will find that Principles of ICD-10-CM Coding is an excellent resource that can be used by medical office personnel, physicians and any others in the healthcare field who want to become familiarized with the new system.
