Making Use of Data For Better Health Key Topic at LTPAC Summit

Date Posted: Tuesday, June 16, 2015

"This fifth edition of the Roadmap discusses how to take all the data that is collected and use it to improve both outcomes for individual patients and overall population health," said Lynne Thomas Gordon, MBA, RHIA, CAE, FACHE, FAHIMA, CEO of the  American Health Information Management Association (AHIMA). "Using this data effectively is a top priority for all of us working in this industry."

Another key topic that will be addressed at the Summit is the effect of the IMPACT Act, passed by Congress last fall, mandating the standardization of post acute care assessment data to allow for comparison across settings (for example, hospitals, rehab centers and private homes), improve quality, communication and interoperability, and reform payment. Since much care now takes place outside a clinical setting, overall community health and wellness and creating an environment suitable to patient needs will also be a key area of discussion at the Summit. On Monday, June 22, a panel will be discussing CMS's plans for IMPACT.

Panelists include:

  • Stella (Stacy) Mandl, RN, BSN, BSW, PHN,  Deputy Division Director, Division of Chronic and Post-Acute Care (DCPAC), Centers for Medicare & Medicaid Services (CMS)
  • Tara McMullen, MPH, PhD, Quality Measures & Health Assessment Group, Center for Clinical Standards & Quality, Centers for Medicare & Medicaid Services
  • Jennie Harvell, M.Ed., Office of the Assistant Secretary for Planning and Evaluation (ASPE) U.S. Department of Health and Human Services (HHS) on detail to DCPAC/CMS
  • Zabrina Gonzaga, MSN, RN, Lantana Consulting Group.

A discussion on Tuesday, June 23, will address developing an action plan for IMPACT.

John Halamka, MD, MS, chief information officer of Beth Israel Deaconess Medical Center, chairman of the New England Healthcare Exchange Network, co-chair of the HIT Standards Committee, professor at Harvard Medical School and a practicing emergency physician, will deliver a keynote speech on "Innovations in Healthcare Technology for Patients, Clinicians and Caregivers."

Additional keynote speakers include:

  • Nick Padula, vice president, home healthcare sales, Philips North America, will discuss "Building Your Community Without Walls" about the importance of making the patient comfortable and community health and wellness.
  • Kelly Cronin, director of the Office of Care Transformation, Office of the National Coordinator for Health Information Technology, will discuss "Federal Leadership to Spur Technology Innovation and Advance Health Information Exchange."
