PrimeWest Health is a Medicaid-managed health plan serving 10 rural counties in western Minnesota. It is organized through a joint powers agreement among the member counties. This creative venture is termed county based purchasing and is allowed by Minnesota legislation enacted in 1997.
The member counties created PrimeWest Health to respond to the specific needs of their low-income residents. This is done by integrating publicly funded health and social services with private health care services.
In 2004, PrimeWest Health was recognized by the Association of Minnesota Counties for its innovation as the recipient of AMC County Achievement Award.
