Recently assuming the role of Director of Coding Operations for the Allegheny Health Network, Ms. Berman, along with her team, is responsible for education, documentation review, coding, and EMR implementation for Allegheny Clinic.
Ms. Berman has over 22 years of experience as an instructor, writer, coder, coding consultant, reimbursement specialist, and performing documentation compliance and medical record reviews and audits.
Prior to joining The Allegheny Health Network, Ms. Berman was the Senior Director of Physician Services at HRAA where she spearheaded the ICD-10 training and education for Physicians. Ms. Berman also provided support for services such as physician charge analysis, variety of auditing services for various physician specialties, billing procedures and EMR implementation for physicians.
She was a Senior Manager for UPMC - Physician Services Division, where she supervised an auditing/educating staff for the Departments of Surgery, Anesthesiology, Cardiovascular, and Behavioral Health. Ms. Berman developed and monitored a compliance plan for the department of surgery (over 300 surgeons, residents, and mid-level providers). Ms. Berman also instructed and guided the physicians in remaining compliant with all payor rules and regulations, while sustaining reimbursement and performed audits for accuracy and thoroughness. With her expertise, Ms. Berman was able to decrease the departmental error rate from 36% to 16% over a 5-year period and increased potential reimbursement for a division of physicians over $200,000 per year, by illustrating appropriate billing and documentation procedures.
Ms. Berman was an Instructor at the North Hills School of Health Occupations, (now Career Training Academy), where she taught Medical Billing/Health Claims Examining and continues to deliver formal education, presentations and seminars on various topics in the healthcare industry including "Teaching Physicians to Properly Document Patient Visits", "Teaching physicians Appropriate E/M Documentation", and "Physician Extenders: The Potential Backbone to a Financially Success Practice."
Ms. Berman is a member of the AAPC, the Optum Coding and Referential Advisory Board, BC Advantage Advisor, and is an Editorial Advisory Board Member for the Coding Institute Publications as well as an Editor for E/M Coding Alert and Modifier Coding Alert. She has published several articles and is a contributing writer for The Coding Edge, Physician Practice, and The Journal of Medical Practice Management. She earned a Bachelor of Science degree in Journalism/Advertising from Ohio University and a Master's degree in Public Management from Carnegie Mellon University.
