I have been trying to locate a site that compare the different Billing Softwares. I am trying to figure out what company to go with and am having trouble finding out who to avoid, who to look into.

any suggestions from you folks??

The best thing to do is start calling vendors and requesting demo's. Rule out right away those that won't send you a working demo. You should have some type of understanding on what the practice management software should do. Demo each program, take your time, call each company and inquire about technical support, marketing support, training, etc. Try to obtain a list of all your costs ahead of time.
Rule out the packages that are $299, $399, etc. Those are mostly all scams. You can't start this business for anything less than $3000 - $5000.If your not prepared to invest that, then you should continue to research until you are.
Check each company out with the BBB of their state, contact yours and their State AG's office and inquire about any complaints.
It's not likely you'll find a site that compares softwares. Within our subscriber resources we have tips on choosing a business opportunity as well as a checklist on how to demo practice management software, and things to look for in your software.

Medisoft is a great software program.  Check out www.mbpros.com where you can try a demo of the program.  Plus, if you mbpros, you don't have to buy the Medisoft software--no start-up costs.

That is incorrect.  Not all low cost softwares are scams.  You DO NOT have to spend a lot of money to get a good software.  Look into ClaimGear at www.claimgear.com.  They are an extremely low cost software with complete functionality.  Just be sure to do your research and check references when looking at software because there are a lot of scams out there.  However, you can definitely start your business for under $1000.

I use Claimgear software and it's great.  I love the software, you can purchase software and some supplies under $1000 but I wouldn't say that you can start a business for under $1000.00.  

Let's look at what you need for starting a business.
1. You need to check with your county and state on what you need to start a business at home in your state and county.  The ad that I had to pay for was alone $150 for running 3 weeks.
2.  You need software, desk, computer, great fax machine, paper, filing supplies and CMS1500 forms and envelopes.
3.  You need money for marketing and .37 cents a stamp does add up, not counting the ink for the printing and paper cost.
4.  Training, additional training and seminars are good to go to, so that you can further your education because you never know enough.

These are just some of the things that you'll need.  It took me around $5000 to start my business and get going.  It takes money to make this work.  You may be lucky and get your first client and they give you a set up fee that helps you on your way.  But I would never say that it'll cost below $1000 for starting a business.

Practice Manager X3 is a software developed specifically for the needs of a medical billing business.  I don't know of any other software program that is developed specifically for this purpose.  You can check it out at www.pmx3.com or the Billing Center site at www.synergymis.com.

I've been using PMX3 and the previous software products from Santiago/Synergy for almost 7 years now. Nothing I have seen or tried has come close to it. It's worth every cent if you ask me.

What type of problems with Santiago Software Co. because they are usually very cooperative.  They do not promise you a client, they do help you with marketing material and support, but they don't promise you will get clients

I should mention here that Synergy does provide you with a "Limited Guarantee."  You can check out their website or call them for further details.  This is also something no other company offers.  A company can provide you with the tools you need to be successful and it is up to you to utilize these tools, but to back it up with a guarantee is truly unique.

Joe, I am very interested in Kareo, but I am VERY dismayed that you REQUIRE information that is NONE OF YOUR BUSINESS just in order for me to take a demo.  Is there any way to test-drive your software WITHOUT divulging such private information such as how many employees I have and what my annual gross receipts are?

I am not sure yet which billing software I want to buy. However, if you make me a good offer, maybe I would consider it.

Just curious, were you having difficult getting doctors and, therefore, decided to not go ahead with a billing business? That is one of my concerns.

what is the cost for this software normally?  I am looking into doing this business through medicalbillingcourse.com and am finding that I will need to purchase this afterwards.

In all likelihood:

1) That person is no longer checking this thread over two years later
2)  It has already been sold
3)  It's no longer HIPAA compliant due to NPI.  

Buying someone else's software usually means you get no support and/or the license is illegal.  Not always, but because of these things you seldom save money by buying used software.

Software is available to suit ANYONE'S budget - you'd be better off looking for a new software from a reputable dealer that fits your budget.

I don't know if you are still researching software.  IF so, I recommend you take a look at PiMS - Patient Information Management Solutions.

I used PiMS for many years in a practice.   PiMS provided robust functionality for all of my billing and collections needs.  The collection worklists and automatic tickler increased my user productivity and decreased by DSO by 60 days shortly after implementation.

I just want to provide an update to my previous advice.  For medical billing businesses, I recommend DAQbilling.  ASP is the way to go.  I co-developed and owned PM2000 which ultimately became PMX3.  I did not have any hand in the development of DAQbilling.  I endorse it because it is that good.

How many doctor/clients do you yourself bill for  on DAQ?  I understand it is a decent doctor's office software, but I'd like to hear from anyone who has multiple-to-many clients and utilizing this ASP.

Yes.  Just as I thought.  It truly frustrates me when we're advised that X product is "the best" by a salesperson who doesn't use it for what's it's being pitched for.  

I've looked at DAQ and other ASPs for the purpose of a billing operation.  I am a PMX3 user and the ASPs cannot compare for this purpose.  I just don't like to see people misled.

You are incorrect in your assumptions.  The majority of DAQ users ARE medical billing businesses.  Medical Billing Business Outsourcing is their primary client.

But, I'm sure you are a competitor with only a server based system who cannot compete and that is the reason for you snide remarks.  SAD.

Ive used medical manager, versyss, centricity, lytec, unisyss, and Zirmed.  

I like Lytec and centricity.  Lytec is the least expensive. Medical Manager and Unisyss were expensive. Versyss was not easy to use and it was on an old 8088 computer with an orange screen monitor.  We got rid of it after paying almost 5,000 per month in fees.  We bought a 486 and Lytec and loved it.

Unisyss cost more than $250,000. It was limited to how many users we could put online.  when we had a problem, they had to dial in to fix the problem.  When we terminated, we lost access to everything because you had to dial in to their system to use it.

Zirmed was nice. Internet based.  Easy to use.  Very nice when working AR recovery.

From a personal perspective, I dont trust softwar vendors.  Ive had them lie to me in order to sell their product.  One time, when researching medical Manager, I was told it would only work on their PC, which was a 386 which they would sell to me for $25,000 in addition to the 500,000 for Medical Manager.  I Know computers and a 386 from Sears or Radio Shack for $3,000 at the time was no different than the so-called $25,000 386. Same procesor, same hard drive, same memory.  The vendor told me MM would do almost anything including dispensing cold beer on a hot day. I went to visit a friend using MM and learned the truth about it.  We liked what we saw but didnt like the fact that we werent told that we had to buy extra modules at $25,000 apiece to do everything we wanted to do and then one module wasnt what we asked for - the collecions module.  We were told it was used to send acccounts to our collection agency. We werent told it could only do one account at a time.  Personally, I trust sales vendors like I trust used car salesmen.  MY dad was a used car salesman and he said he would say anything to make the sale.  I agree with him.  Sadly, my dad would do the same thing at home with us.

I know of several people using Synergy products and have heard great things.  Remember, all we are giving is our personal opinions based on our experience. It is up to the original poster to make a final decision on what to use.  I feel forums are not the place to sell things such as software.  I have seen, in the past, where a vendor would ask a friend to go on line and ask what software to use, to generate responses as a means of trying to sell the software.  Personally speaking, if a software vendor wants to sell their softeware, then they should take out an advertisement in the BC Advantage Magazine.  Otherwise, the original poster should follow the advice provided and make their own decision as to which one to purchase and use.  Price of a software does not make it a scam.  I paid $250 for Lytec back in 1994 and it did better than the $500,000 medical manager and $250,000 unisyss.  I still use Lytec to this day. It has proven itself and o me, if it aint broke, dont fix it.

I forgot, when calling software vendors, try to find out the number to their cusomer service department.  Call that number around noonish to seewhat type of response you get.  if the number rings off the hook or you get into an answering machine loop, you are on hold foever, or the people answering when they do answer are real jerks.  what kind of help will you get when you need it the most.   This helped me provide my bosses with answers when they asked me to research software.  Now, no matter what software or hardware I buy, I do the customer service check.  

To me, it doesnt matter if customer service is Marge in Minnesota or Guptar in India, if they can help, that is what matters.  Ive had instances where Marge is unable to help and I was put in a loop where the problem was never solved and Ive had Guptar solved the problem in 30 seconds.

Tammy H  You did not answer my question.  I simply asked how many clients you bill for, and are there any DAQ users out there who have multiple-to-many clients and utilize this ASP for a billing center operation.  

For the sake of argument, let's just say I'm attempting to reinforce my choice of software, or allowing you to make an argument for ASPs in a billing operation setting.

I'm mainly doing consulting now and when I was previously doing billing I have used 6 different softwares.
I really never thought I'd reccomend the ASP billing softwares but from doing consulting more providers are liking the ASP option more and more, they get to maintain control and that is always key to doctors when you are trying to get them to outsource.
I like Kareo and several of my clients are very happy with them (kareo.com)  I have seen and demo'd DAQ most recently and I'm pretty impressed and I think it's very comparible to Kareo but more affordable.
As for PMX.. I was a Santiago billing company long before they became synergy and I've demo'd their software(s) and thought them to be.. "OK".  
I hated medisoft, Lytec was ok. Altapoint was very good.

As for Medical Manager.. I still have several clients I consult with that swear by it.. I've learned to "Like" it over the years and yes it's pricey but so far I've not run across much it can't do.

You get what you pay for. I made SEVERAL mistakes in my medical billing business when it came to software. If I had it to do all over again, I'd go with ASP based Less hassle, doctors are happy!

Do you bill for many clients utilizing an ASP system?  I like a few of the ASPs as well, but I'm wondering if anyone actually runs a multi-client billing operation utilizing an ASP.  I can see servicing a few clients but they seem very expensive if you're servicing many, and I want to grow my operation to service many clients, not just a few.

I know many billing companies servicing multiple clients on systems such as kareo or ClaimGear and also DAQ. Like I said before, I'm mainly doing consulting for providers and I'm also doing training on the softwares that I know. I do have clients using Kareo that service multiple locations as well. Very flexible, I am still getting to know DAQ's system and I'm pretty impressed so far. My clients with Kareo are very happy, the support could be a little better but it's not so bad.

I would be more then happy to suggest ECLIPSE Practice Management Software. Its not the cheapest but it also is not the mot expensive and is all inclusive. Check it out @ www.Galactek.com

I have a state of the art billing system that is very easy to use with outstanding support. Your providers can log in and see their records and reports. I paid over $ 15,000..000 for the system and I am willing to let it go for $ 3,000.00 or less.
The system does so much for you that the system is doing the work.
It is a great system.

Tony - thanks for the website, www.knowledge-maps.com.  It's the first useful site I've found so far.  I'd love for it to have a side-by-side comparison, but oh well.  http://www.medicalbillingsoftwarepro.com was helpful as well.  The other sites such as www.softwareadvice.com, only list the companies that have paid them a flat fee to be recommended.  Although I think the site can be very helpful, I don't think it's as comprehensive as I would like for my research.

freemedicalbilling.net is a web based software that only charges a ala cart fee of about 25 dollars a month.  They use Office Ally and Availity and dont charge for upgrades or upgrades

I don't know if any of you have experience with MTBC out of NJ, but I can tell you there are several medical practices in Montana which have had significant problems with them since they purchased a billing company here.  The EMR is unstable, and the billing is terrible...accounts not worked, disconnected phone numbers, etc. I would urge you to check your accounts very carefully.

Personally, I would not use them. But if you do, then note that their contract is very one sided.  

The depth of problems, and their non responsiveness, coupled with their rapid growth, suggests they may be outgrowing their capabilities.  Why?  Who knows.  Perhaps it is to try and sell out to another company. Whatever the reason, beware.

I have used PMX3 billing software since the beginning...I have been a customer of Synergy MIS for over 15 years....have you been able to get ahold of the company...I have been trying since mid-May, leaving voicemails and sending emails but no one contacts me..I am getting very nervous since the program is not ICD-10 ready

We used to have Medisoft but the technical support fee is going high we found a solution to this increasing technical support annual fee  try Office Ally.com it is free as long as you have more commercial  claims than Medicare.  When I say FREE it means zero, you don't  have to pay a monthly technical support fee, pls go to their website and try their demo.  I will assure you it is user friendly and it is FREE....
