My boss is thinking about paying per chart, I am a coder/abstractor for emergency medicine. I am trying to get an idea on the going rate and how well it works. This is a computer chart also. Thanks for any feedback.

A few years ago I got $3 per ER chart (might be more now) and since you have to abstract your own work you can charge for that as well.  I'm guessing anywhere in the ballpark of $1 - 1.50 per chart.

I have actually coded ER records and was paid by productivity.  I was paid anywhere from .35 - .40cents per code.  Does not sound like alot but this includes ICD-9 and CPT codes.

I would prefer to be paid by code/productivity than by the hour!  After awhile you don't mind coding burns, lacerations and other procedures.

Good Luck
