Medical Billing/Coding Question?

Hello! I'm getting ready to start a local adult education class for Medical Insurance Coding. I'm still somewhat confused to the differences & opportunities for the biller/coder jobs. Is Medical Insurance coding classes just an add-on to knowing or working as a Certified Medical Billing Specialist(CMBS)? In other words, by taking the Medical Coding classes would I get the ability to work as just a CMBS & work as a coding specialist if chosen? I'm looking for in the near future an online job for biller/coder due to home-related health problems for a family member. I will worry about an office job in the future but this can't be done at this current time. I have to be at home for the near future so I want to be clear of my opportunities with this class. Thanks for your time!

The Certified Medical Billing Specialist (CMBS) is certification provided by the Medical Association of Billers, an international organization of coders and billers.  This certification comes after taking the CMBS course, offered by the MAB or by taking the CMBS test which is taken under strict proctorship observation.  The CMBS certification is recognized by AAPC, AHIMA, the Nevada Committee for Post Secondary Education and now by the Federal Trade Commission.

The course you are about to take has nothing to do with the MAB, or as an adjunct to the CMBS certification.

There are some opportunities for online coding and billing; however, it is very difficult to enter into those roles at an entry level.  There is usually a requirement for certification in order to hold those types of distance positions.  As an alternative to coding there is a national competency exam for the billing portion given by the NCCT and it is the NCICS. You can obtain more information by checking online.  I would also recomment that you check on www.aapc.com and www.ahima.org.  Good Luck!
