Medical transcriptionists listen to voice recordings that physicians and other health professionals make and convert them into written reports.

Medical Coders read the written reports / patient charts to assign codes that indicate the diagnosis and treatments.  This coding is done to 1) ensure that the health care providers doing the procedures are properly reimbursed for their services and 2) to track disease and the outcomes of the medical treatment. Codes are easier to work with than lengthy narratives when submitting bills or tracking disease.

Medical coding professionals act as the link between the billing office and the doctor. They assign codes to patient data for reimbursement and ensure that the data is accurate. They review patient data for medical conditions and retrieve information required by the medical staff.

Medical transcriptionists convert the voice recordings of doctors and nurses into written reports by interpreting medical jargon which then goes on to become a part of the patients medical history.
