Advice on coding

I have been working in a healthcare managment firm for 10 years.  I've been thinking about taking online courses either through the AAPC or a community college to become a certified coder.  I've heard people say they have a hard time getting hired without previous coding experience.  I feel confused if I should try the online courses for coding.  I don't want to take the class and then not be able to find a job.  I'm not interested in billing, just coding.  I would try for the outpatient coding.  A lot of jobs I saw online want you to have a RHIT degree.  Could anyone give me advice as far as how hard it is to obtain a coding job with just a CPC certification?  And also, does it matter if I take classes through the AAPC or through a community college?  I would greatly apprecdiate any advice.
