I have done some research on medical billing and coding and it seems to be something I would be interested in trying. It is also offered as an 18 month course at a proprietary school, Virginia College, right next to where I work, which is incredibly convenient and a good fit for me because I would prefer to learn in a classroom environment instead of online.

My only concern is with proprietary schools in general and VA College in particular. I want to make sure that their certifications and degrees will actually be taken at face value when applying for a job after obtaining one. Does anyone have experience with either, and can reassure me that I would get decent training and a good opportunity by going through their program?

Check the schools affliation with AAPC and AHIMA.  Also ask the staff at the school how testing is handled.
