AAPC Apprenticeship??

I am about to enroll in a course to prepare to sit for the CPC exam.  I read somewhere that AAPC requires an apprenticeship?  Is this true and, if so, does this mean that you must complete an apprenticeship PRIOR to receiving your CPC?   I'm confused on this point.  I currently work for a company who provides outsourced transcription and coding services, and am moving from transcription to coding, so would like to see if anyone can answer this question for me.

Thanks.

does not require apprenticeship, but if you havnt put in your two years, when you take your cpc exam and pass you are cpc qualified but considered an apprentice .

Hi Karen,

I did the ISP(Independent Study Program) with AAPC. I completed the course in about 10months.  Shortly thereafter I sat for the CPC and I was successful. I did some experience about the course work though so it made thing a lot easier.

Good luck.

HI,
I run the program at New Horizons in Nashville, TN.
The AAPC considers 1 year of school to be the equivalent of 1 year experience. When you take your exam, you will receive a CPC-A. Then after working for one year, you get your CPC.

Hi there I read your response that you took the ISP from AAPC. Was it easy to understand if you study on your own? I am currently looking to taking coding class. I am doing medical billing and do the coding myself but I want to be certified. How much did you pay for the ISP?
looking forward to your reply

An instructor led course is better for someone who is not self-disciplined or needs a lot of interation.  We have coding classes starting in January at New Horizons, Nashville.

YOU NEED TO BE CAREFUL AS FAR AS WHAT SCHOOL YOU GO TO.  DONT TAKE THE SALES PERSONS WORD FOR EVERYTHING AND DONT SIGN ANYTHING UNTIL YOU VERIFY WHAT THEY SAY.  I WAS TOLD THAT I HAD A STUDENT LOAN THRU SALLY MAE AND AFTER SIGNING UP FOR SCHOOL I FOUND OUT IT WAS A TRAINING PROGRAM NOT A STUDENT LOAN.  WHICH MEANS ITS NOT A TAX RIGHT OFF.  WHICH OF COURSE I WAS TOLD BY THREE DIFFERENT PEOPLE AT THE SCHOOL THAT IT WAS.  YOU WOULD HAVE TO ACTUALLY VERIFY IT WITH SALLY MAE BEFORE SIGNING.  ALSO, IF YOU ARE TOLD THAT THEY WILL PLACE YOU AND/OR GIVE YOU AN INTERNSHIP.  YOU NEED TO VERIFY ALL OF THE PLACES THAT THEY SAY THEY HAVE A CONTRACT WITH.   I PASSED THE CPC-A EXAM IN MAY AND AM STILL FIGHTING WITH THE SCHOOL BECAUSE THATS WHAT THEY PROMISED AND THEY DIDNT HAVE CONTRACT WITH ANYONE UNTIL A MONTH AGO. I DID PUT OUT RESUMES EVERYWHERE AND NO ONE WILL HIRE ME WITHOUT THE SECOND YEAR OF CODING.  THIS INCLUDES TEMP AGENCIES.

That is too bad about the school you attended. Concentra hires without the second year. Their ads even say "new graduates encouraged". They hire for auditors. As an auditor, you need to know coding.
When going to a school, it is good to meet the teacher too. At New Horizons-Nashville, we do not offer internships or job placement. We have relationships with some companies that look at our graduates first. That is all. Schools should not promise placement if they don't have it.
Ask the job placement person for names of student who have jobs from the school. That is the best way to find out if the job placement program works.

I teach at New Horizons in Nashville, TN. The New Horizons program as a whole is very good. Any instructor led program at a New Horizons is excellent. I do not recommend any online program.

There is a New Horizons in Los Angeles.
The CPC is only available through the AAPC. The CBCS - Certified Billing/Coding Specialist is through the NHA. The CPC is for coding the CBCS is for Insurance Billing. The only other coding cert is CCS-P given by American Health Information Management Association (AHIMA). The New Horizons online live program is pretty good. You can go to the location in Los Angeles and sign up, then take classes from home. There might also be a location in Anaheim.

If you live in Long Beach, you might want to look into the medical coding class offered by NOCROP (North Orange County Regional Occupational Program). There is a $20 registration fee, and then you pay for the cost of the books (which is cheaper through NOCROP than purchased online) and nothing else. They have a high success rate with students passing the CPC exam, and some have gone after CCS successfully as well! NOCROP offers day and night classes.

I have a wealth of experience from working in medical office environments and other health care facilities even though I did not do much billing and coding. Now that I have the degree where can I get the two years I need so that someone will hire me? I do want to get frustrated...
