Point of information. What is the definition of segment in spine surgery? I've addressed this question to AMA and received a form stating they no longer accept written communication or op reports for review to questions. I've seen the definition in the CPT book section about instrumentation. I've seen articles by Margie Scalley Vaught as well in which she states the inconsistency in the use of "segment". I've also looked at publications from NASS. CPT 63047 is per segment vs 63030 per interspace. Both codes include removal of a portion of the lamina. With 63030 laminotomy could be both above and below the disc with the intent of only a portion of the lamina removed. With 63047 a complete laminectomy could be performed which seems like more bone work than the 63030 at least in theory. SO how should you code laminectomy L1-2, L2-3, L3-4, if laminectomy is performed at each level, 1,2,3,4? 63047 X1 @L1
63048 x 3 for L2,3,4. Opinions appreciated
