With 2013 fast approaching it seems that ICD-10 is on everyone's minds these days and I don't know about you but my time is getting more and more precious everyday. I need a way of learning about ICD-10-CM in a way that is easy to pick up and put down in the time that I do get in a day.

Voila! Here comes Understanding ICD-10-CM and ICD-10-PCS - A worktext. This book takes a comprehensive look at ICD-10 coding and provides an opportunity to learn the concepts in an easily understandable way. Obviously those who are planning on getting into the industry in the future will be learning ICD-10 when it's time but those of us who have been working with ICD-9 for our entire career will need help transitioning and retraining the way our coding brain thinks.

The chapters starts with covering topics such as introductions, an overview of ICD-10, ICD-10 coding conventions, steps in diagnostic code selection and diagnostic coding guidelines before moving onto the 21 chapters, from infectious and parasitic diseases to injuries, including external causes and reasons for visit. The chapters then cover topics such as introduction to ICD-10-PCS, medical and surgical section, placement sections, measurement and monitoring section through mental health and substance abuse treatment.

Each chapter is really well laid out with objectives, key terms, information, exercises, any relevant Internet links, a summary and a chapter review. The book does come with a StudyWare CD-Rom", which can be used in conjunction with each chapter to help with learning. Also found on the CD-Rom are quizzes and activities and a practice mode that gives you multiple attempts to get the answers correct. You will learn instantly if you're correct or not and will get an explanation why the answer is what it is. Also included is an EncoderPro Free Trial CD-Rom from Ingenix that includes ICD-10 codes as well as a mapping tool.

So, if you're like me and need an effective way of learning about ICD-10 then this is a great book to use to prepare your brain for the changes. 2013 will be here before you know it!
