5 Minutes with... Jack Beberniss, CMRM

BC Advantage (BCA): Can you tell us a little bit about yourself and how you got started in the healthcare industry?
Jack Beberniss (JB):
I was born in California, and grew up in the Midwest in Grand Island, Nebraska.   After graduating high school from GISH, I enlisted in the United States Marine Corps and served in Yuma, AZ as an Aviation mechanic, Plane Captain, and crew leader.   After 6 years serving our country, I returned back to the Midwest and pursued many technical jobs in manufacturing, including working for a major agriculture/construction equipment manufacturer where I would work on and coordinate many WCM Projects.  World Class Manufacturing-WCM-is a process of streamlining business and reducing waste to allow them to be more competitive and profitable.   After spending almost a full decade of making process improvements for a Fortune 500 company, I decided to take my skills to the private sector in the Medical Industry to help the ones who help us, in our times of need.

BCA: You are now the CEO and owner of JB Revenue Management, LLC. What made you want to start your own company and work in revenue cycle management?
JB:
I have a passion and desire to help others reach their goals in life, whether they may be personal or financial.  I like to help people succeed in life, which is why I chose to help physicians deal with the increasing number of challenges they are facing every day.

BCA: What are the biggest challenges you and your company face when helping private practices maximize their revenue?
JB:
On a day to day basis, one of the biggest challenges that we see is being able to earn the trust of the physicians and practice managers. Once we build a long productive relationship, we are able to work with the practice to provide solutions in all steps of the Revenue Cycle. We can provide many solutions while leaving total control in the physicians’ hands.

BCA: What are the necessary steps you take when looking at how to help the practice to increase their revenue and cut down on paperwork? Is there a certain process you have that seems to work the best for you and the practice you are helping?
JB:
We start by building trust with the practice and establishing ourselves as a valuable practice resource and then use a proprietary evaluation tool to give the practice a check-up.  We call this our "FREE Practice Analysis," which allows us to get the valuable information that is needed to establish a baseline of the current status of the practice.   After carefully reviewing and evaluating the baseline of the practice, we provide solutions to the physicians and recommendations as to how to meet their practice goals.

BCA: Describe a typical work day.
JB:
In a typical work day, I will split my time networking, making follow up contacts, working on client improvements, and evaluating the resources and needs of the company to provide the best service and experience to our customers.

BCA: What would you say has been your biggest professional achievement so far and why?
JB:
I believe that each and every physician that I help is my biggest achievement.   Just understanding what they are going through and what little comfort I can give them by understanding their needs and providing solutions for them to be successful is very rewarding in itself.

BCA: For those who are interested in working in your field, can you give us more insight as to how one should get started to become a certified Medical Revenue Manager and why having this credential is important to you?
JB:
One has many different options as to becoming a Medical Revenue Manager.  They can read books, take college classes, take correspondence courses online, or even attend training sessions to achieve these credentials. What it means to be a Certified Revenue Medical Manager is to have the knowledge and experience to help businesses and physician practices with all aspects of the revenue cycle from the complete cycle of receivables, reimbursement, electronic records, payment options, coding, and marketing.  If you have the desire to help physicians thrive in private practice and continue to serve our communities, then this is the career for you.

BCA: What was the most efficient learning tool when you were in school to become certified as a Medical Revenue Manager?
JB:
Wow!  The most efficient learning tool is absolutely being hands on and in real time.   Experience is one of the most valuable learning tools and being able to communicate with business people who are living the life as a CMRM is truly a valuable experience.

BCA:  On your website (www.jbrevenuemanagement.com), what helped you in making your service products the right choice for your company and for the practices you help?
JB:
