On January 1, 2009 CMS made significant changes related to provider enrollment. These changes have an effective date of April 1, 2009 and can have a significant impact on practices enrolling new providers and with the reactivation of providers Medicare numbers.
CMS Transmittal 286 addresses changes regarding the rejections and denials of certain physician and non-physician CMS-855 applications, timeframes for reporting CMS-855 changes of information, licensure and education requirements for certain types of non-physician practitioners, revocation effective dates, and the change which has a significant impact , effective dates of CMS-855 applications submitted by physicians and non-physician practitioners.
As of April1,2009 the effective date for a provider/group who has submitted a CMS-855 application will now be the later of the date of filing or the date the provider/group first started furnishing services at the new location. (For Internet bases PECOS (Provider Enrollment Chain & Ownership System) applications CMS defines the date of filing as the date the contractor received the electronic version of the enrollment application and the signed certification statement.)
