MedRhythms has announced that the Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services (CMS) has granted a new reimbursement code for its innovative stroke rehabilitation system, InTandem.
InTandem is specifically designed to enhance walking ability in individuals with chronic stroke.
The newly assigned Health Care Common Procedure Coding System (HCPCS) code, E3200, qualifies InTandem under Medicare's durable medical equipment benefit category. This new code will take effect on October 1, 2024, making it easier for patients to access MedRhythms' rhythmic auditory stimulation (RAS) therapy, which has been clinically proven to improve gait and mobility in home settings.
InTandem offers personalized and progressive RAS therapy through a combination of wearable sensors and an adaptive control unit. This integration of advanced hardware, software, and clinical practices allows patients to carry out evidence-based interventions independently at home.
Brian Harris, MedRhythms' co-founder and CEO, expressed optimism about the development, stating, “The introduction of this HCPCS code brings new hope to chronic stroke patients facing walking difficulties and further advances MedRhythms' mission to provide effective care to those who need it.”
The InTandem system, which was awarded FDA breakthrough device designation in 2020, was classified as a Class II medical device in July 2023. Clinical trials have confirmed its safety and effectiveness in addressing gait impairments caused by chronic stroke.
Jennifer Lavanture, Vice President of Business Development and Corporate Strategy at MedRhythms, emphasized the importance of CMS's decision, saying, “These developments are critical in making this revolutionary treatment accessible to patients. We commend CMS for their thorough evaluation and appreciate the support and input from patients, clinicians, and stakeholders throughout this process.”
In the previous year, MedRhythms also made its neurorehabilitation system InTandem available by prescription for adults with chronic stroke-related walking impairments.
